Perfectly Norman by Tom Percival, published by Bloomsbury is an incredibly moving picture book with a story and a message that will warm your heart.
Norman was a fairly normal boy doing normal things until one day… he grew wings. Norman is quite shocked by this but also thinks it’s pretty wonderful as he zooms up into the sky flying and frolicking with the birds in the clouds.
But suddenly he realises that he needs to go home and is worried about what his parents and everyone else will think to his newest feature. So Norman hides his wings under his coat and refuses to take it off.
Norman keeps his coat on all the time, even at bathtime, and soon becomes sad and isolated, feeling out of place he tries to hide his secret.
It’s painfully sad watching Norman withdraw and the excellent but minimal use of colour in the illustrations reflects how a child might be feeling if they’re anxious or worried, hiding something about themselves for fear of what others will think.
This is a fantastic story, it celebrates peoples differences and highlights that every single person is unique and has equal worth. An incredibly powerful and important message about having the strength and courage to be who you are.
When Norman chooses to show the world his wings at the end of the story he’s on top of the world, finally free to be himself.
