In this super-sized book we travel the world exploring the many different animals who share our planet. From the icy polar regions to the tropical rainforests, the cloud forests in the mountain ranges to the deepest oceans, every habitat is described in clear detail alongside the species that thrive there.

Focusing first on the geography of each area before delving in to detail about the animals that inhabit them provides a whole new way to see the world. Placing each animal in context in this way allows the reader to think about how animals and the environment interact and sustain each other.

The book is split in to continents with a section at the end which discusses the future of different species and how changes in our environment will effect them.

A fascinating diagram, The Tree of Life details how the millions of different species on Earth are related to each other. This is built on throughout the book with excellent descriptions of how animals have adapted and evolved over time to suit their surroundings as well as explanations on how the land masses on Earth were formed.

Illustrated with exquisite images of life like animals against a mixed background of maps and landscapes each page is a joy.

In some places the images are extended through fold out pages so a whole continent can be viewed together.

As well as providing fascinating facts about the most well known animals we are also introduced to new and less well known species such as the olinguito mammals living in the cloud forests of the Andes who were discovered in 2013.

A truly wonderful book which showcases the natural world in all its glory, this is non fiction at its best.

  1. It looks fantastic, just the sort of book my kids used to enjoy at Christmas. Evolution is a particularly interesting subject.

My favourite animal is either the panda or the elephant. I just can’t decide between the two!

  2. What a lovely book and so beautiful, would look amazing on our large book display, where the books are perused daily by interested students. My favourite animal…. tricky, but I will go with the Walrus.

  3. What a lovely book, we are big fans of elephants and turtles. I love the cover, it’s a tribute to the late Sir Terry Pratchett I’m sure, his Discworld was set on four elephants sitting on the back of a giant turtle. #KLTR
