Fantastically Great Women Who Made History is the second book on great women in history from the brilliant Kate Pankhurst, published by Bloomsbury.
We are big fans of Fantastically Great Women who Changed the World and couldn’t wait to have a read of Kate Pankhurst’s latest work. We were not disappointed. Following the same design as the first book we take a journey through time meeting trailblazing women whose actions and lives have made history.
Covering mighty rulers and freedom fighters, doctors, writers and spies, the women in this book stood up for what they believed in and followed their dreams in societies that didn’t support or expect women to take on these roles. Women who paved the way in medicine, the performing arts, literature and one woman who truly reached for the stars, Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space.
The women in this book often came up against against sexism and injustice, with some also fighting against harmful, longstanding traditions like foot binding in China as well as facing racism or religious prejudice. Each woman’s story is told across a double page spread with fully immersive illustrations taking you through different countries and times in history in their own style.
This book covers women from all over the world, from a wealth of different backgrounds. And whilst their lives and circumstances are very different they all highlight the struggle that women have faced, and are still facing, in this world.
We have come a long way since the Suffragettes campaigns and since Dr Elizabeth Blackwell became the first female doctor but prejudice and injustice still exist. The role models in this book are sure to inspire a new generation of women and girls to carry on where they left off, forging their own path and making their own history. This book may be about women but it is just as important for boys and men to read it too, prejudice can only begin to be broken if we’re all on the same page.
