October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month and today marks the start of Baby Loss Awareness Week. Running from the 9th to the 15th of October, this week aims to raise awareness, end the silence and remember those babies who died during pregnancy, at birth, shortly after birth or during infancy.
I came across a company recently who produce personalised books to support families following the loss of a child. The Story of.. was started by Kate Polley after the loss of her son Sam. Sam has a surviving twin, Finn, and Kate wrote a story called Sam and Finn to help explain to Finn and his older sibling about their brother and all the ways he will always be a part of their lives.
Kate’s original story formed the basis of The Story Of.. and there are now 30 different variations of the books to support children and their families in their grief including stories of babies, combinations of twins or triplet loss and with child, adult and pregnancy loss stories also available.
A personalised book offers the opportunity to use the name of your loved one on the cover and throughout the story and also to choose the hair and skin colour for the child or adult in the illustrations to make the story even more personal.
Personalising these books with a child’s name provides a wonderful opportunity to keep speaking their name and acknowledging them as part of a family, as a person who is still loved very much.
Non personalised books are also available if a personalised one is not for you or if you’re looking for more general books to use with children in hospitals or care settings for instance.
The books are beautifully produced, written with tenderness and a great amount of sensitivity alongside colourful illustrations that are both gentle and engaging.
The aim of the books is that they will be a story of hope for families, reminding them that it is ok to grieve and also to show the ways that their loved ones can be found in all the different parts of their lives and in the love that remains for them.
Books are always such a fantastic tool to help support children through challenging and difficult times in their lives and these books will be a valuable tool to support them in talking about their loss whilst also helping children and their families remember their loved ones.
If you would like to order a book they are available to buy on The Story Of.. website where you can also donate any amount to go towards books that will be sent to hospitals and other organisations working with grieving families.
