The Laugh Out Loud Awards (or the Lollies for short) were created by Scholastic to celebrate the funniest reads in children’s literature every year. This year’s shortlist is fantastic but the book that has really been making us chuckle is Mr Bunny’s Chocolate Factory by Elys Dolan, published by Oxford University Press and we’re delighted to be featuring it in the Lollies blog tour.
If you’ve ever wondered where chocolate eggs come from then you’ll find the answer in this book, only it might come as quite a surprise. It turns out there’s a factory full of chickens who eat so much chocolate they lay chocolate eggs!
Mr Bunny is in charge of the factory and after seeing how successful his chickens are at this chocolate egg game he becomes greedy. Although not for the chocolate, his only concern is money, and lots of it. The poor chickens are overworked, overfed and they’ve had enough. The chickens are on strike.
Mr Bunny decides he doesn’t need the chickens and tries to run the factory himself but the cracks soon start to show and even Edgar, the quality control unicorn (yes that’s right, Edgar the quality control unicorn) can’t take it anymore.
Will Edgar and the chickens manage to show Mr Bunny the error of his ways and create a calm and nuturing working environment for them all?
The best funny books always start with an off the wall setting and this one is so bizarre it had us giggling from the first page.
With busy illustrations of the factory there are tons of funny details and quite a few disasters to pick out, we spend a long time looking through at the many chickens on each page to see what they’re all up to. There are also some rather interesting goings on in the lives of the chickens which make for very funny little side plots.
And if you fancy the idea of creating your own gang of chickens then Elys Dolan has very kindly shared a tutorial all about how to draw one to get you started.
