Waving goodbye to his human, pug is sad; he needs a hug. But with his human out of the house for the day who can he find to hug? Cat? No, cat does not hug. Rabbit? Too busy munching carrots. Crocodile? Not with those big snappy jaws!

Poor Pug tries all the animals he can find but they don’t want to hug him (apart from the crocodile but Pug is not too keen on that as you can imagine). There must be someone for Pug to hug…

There’s only one human character in this book and it’s great to see that she is a BAME character to increase the diversity on all our bookshelves and represent readers from minority backgrounds.

With minimal text and lots of repetition and rhyme this is a perfect story to share with very little ones. It’s fast paced and short enough to keep their attention and it offers lots of opportunities to practice new vocabulary as you name all the animals.

Big, bold colourful illustrations and the friendly, wide eyed Pug make for an instantly engaging story. And after all that talk of hugs the story naturally invites you to end the story with a big hug together, the best end to story time.
