Scribble Witch – Notes in Class by Inky Willis published by Hodder Children’s Books is the first book in a new series of stories about a doodle drawing witch who comes to life.
Molly is having her worst day ever; first she finds out her best friend is moving schools, then she misses her playtime because she was so sad about her friend leaving she didn’t finish her work and to top it off, her yogurt has exploded in her lunchbox.
The day takes an even stranger turn when Molly finds a small drawing of a witch inside an old dictionary. Notes, the paper witch, comes to life and starts writing notes to Molly. Mischievous and fiercely loyal to her new friend Molly, Notes is determined to help with all her problems. The problem is sometimes Notes’s help ends up landing Molly in more trouble than she started in!
Written in a conversational style and full of little jokes this is a fast paced and fun story with a narrative that reminds me of Pamela Butchart’s books. Aimed at 7-9 year olds, the text is broken up with doodle illustrations making it an easy to read and appealing story.
As part of the Scribble Witch blog tour Inky Willis has shared a step by step guide on drawing your own Scribble Witch, It couldn’t be simpler, you’ll just need to keep your eye on your drawings once you’re finished in case they come to life too!
